Physical Education
Curriculum intent
Our PE curriculum helps every child enjoy being active, learn new skills, and feel confident in sport. We want pupils to build healthy habits, work well with others, and understand why exercise is important. We use the GetSet4PE scheme, which gives us a clear lesson structure and helps children learn skills in small, easy steps. PE lessons are calm, safe, and welcoming, with inclusive activities that help all children take part.
We make sure every child has the same chances to join in, no matter their background or ability. Some pupils may have extra support or adaptations so they can succeed. Specialist sports coaches and local partners help us offer clubs, festivals, and friendly competitions. Our aim is simple: every child should enjoy being active now, feel proud of their progress, and build confidence for life.
What does learning look like at our school?
Learning in PE at our school is active, simple to follow, and welcoming for every child. We use the GetSet4PE scheme, which helps us teach skills in small steps so children feel confident and know what to expect. Children learn by moving, practising, and trying new challenges in a calm and safe space. Adults show skills clearly, and children get time to practise together before trying things on their own.
Learning in PE looks like:
- Active participation — children moving, joining in, and practising skills
- Clear demonstrations — adults showing each skill slowly and clearly
- Inclusive activities — every child able to take part and succeed
- Positive teamwork — children helping, encouraging, and supporting each other
- High expectations — children challenged at the right level
- Calm routines — simple steps that help children feel safe and ready
- Independent practice — children trying skills on their own once they feel confident
Learning in PE is more than sport. It helps children grow in confidence, stay healthy, and enjoy being active now and in the future.
How can families support at home?
Families can help children enjoy PE and stay active by encouraging regular movement at home. This can be very simple: walking to school, playing in the park, riding a bike, or dancing in the living room. These small activities help children build confidence and healthy habits. Talking positively about being active and celebrating small achievements also supports children’s motivation.
Families can help children remember their learning by asking them to show a PE skill, such as a balance, a throw, or a short sequence. Making sure children have the right PE kit and feel ready for lessons also helps them take part confidently.
