Reasoning is fundamental to knowing and doing mathematics. Reasoning enables children to make use of their mathematical skills and so reasoning could be thought of as the ‘glue’ which helps mathematics makes sense.

What is reasoning?

Understanding, using and applying maths skills in a much deeper way.

To solve problems by making relationships between mathematical ideas and proving what they have found out through argument and explanation using mathematical language.

Children need to be able to explain their understanding clearly. Reasoning helps children consolidate (deepen) their grasp of maths concepts. We have developed steps to develop reasoning through each concept:
