Summary of Behaviour Policy for Parents and Carers

Introduction
As part of our commitment to improve the quality of teaching and learning we provide for pupils, we would like to outline some of the rules and procedures we use to manage pupilsí behaviour at The Park Primary. In particular, we would like to give you a little bit more information on how teachers in your childís year group promote good behaviour and what happens if a pupil chooses not to follow the class rules.

Aims
We believe that children learn best when they know where they stand, when they feel safe and when they feel valued as members of the community.

As a Whole School
At The Park Primary School, we believe that pupils and staff should show care, consideration and courtesy to all member of the school community at all times. By treating each other with good manners, we aim to develop a culture of mutual respect and trust. As a consequence, we treat children in a fair and consistent way.

Our behaviour policy aims to help children grow in a safe and secure environment, helping them to become positive, responsible and increasingly independent members of the school community.

In order to achieve this we need to:
• Have a clear system of rules, rewards and consequences
• Encourage children to make positive choices about their conduct
• Involve parents in their childís behaviour
• Have an uncompromising rejection to bullying
• Be proactive in addressing issues of extreme behavioural difficulties when they occur.

As a Class
Class rules are negotiated between children and the class teacher in September and are periodically reviewed. The class teacher will discuss with the children what the rules mean and how they apply in given situations. It is important that the wording of the rules is age appropriate and children need to be very clear as to their meaning. Teachers will spend time talking to children about what is expected of them, so that every child in the school knows the standards of behaviour that we expect in our school, how good behaviour is rewarded and what happened if pupils make poor choices about their behaviour. The rules are displayed prominently in each classroom and are regularly referred to by the class teacher.

As a teacher
It is the responsibility of the class teacher to ensure that the schoolís expectations are adhered to in their classroom and that their classes behave in a responsible manner during lesson time. They are also responsible for maintaining good behaviour throughout the school with all pupils.
• The class teacher has high expectations of all children with regard to behaviour.
• The class teacher treats each child fairly and applies the behaviour code consistently.
• If a child repeatedly misbehaves in class, the teacher may keep a record of all such incidents.

In a bid to develop a consistent approach across the school, each class uses the same consequences when dealing with poor behaviour. The process for managing a childís poor behaviour is the same irrespective of their class or year group. In this way, children will be very clear about the how consequences are consistently applied through out the school.
